Hardcover Dust Jacket

I was assigned to create a dust jacket for a novel of my choice. I chose The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and I wanted to draw from the original cover design while taking a modern and dynamic spin on it. Being a very well-loved novel, I wanted to integrate aspects from the original cover like the colors, especially the bright green, so it was still recognizable to fans but also intriguing to new readers. Taking advantage of the connecting elements of the covers, spine and flaps, the paper from the typewriter spills into the other elements of the jacket, leading the reader’s eyes to look at all aspects of the jacket, not just the cover.

Martini Recipe Pages

In the class GRC 318: Digital Typography, we were assigned to create four pages for a recipe of our choice that could be pulled from a cookbook. I initially knew I wanted my recipe to be reminiscent of the 1940’s, and I became inspired by the era of Casablanca with bars, billiards, and card games.

I enjoyed how for this assignment we were required to take our own photos of the recipe. I had fun translating my initial inspiration into the final design with the photos, combined with specific fonts and colors.

Special Edition Book Design

I was assigned to create a special edition of a novel of my choice. I chose the novel The Devil Wears Prada, and I was inspired by the old fashion sketches and newspaper illustrations of the 1950’s and onward, so I wanted the visual aspect of the book to draw from the unique aesthetics of the editorial industry. The typeface I chose, FreightDisp Pro, is a serif font that imitates the appearance of many magazine titles such as “Vogue” in all caps while also being legible and editorial-looking in small caps. For the end sheets, I pulled graphics from Dorothy Moore’s Pattern Drafting and Dressmaking onto a beige background, accentuating the nostalgic feel. All of the illustrations in the novel were completed by me and meant to simulate old fashioned illustrations from vintage editorial material.

In the class we printed, bound, and built the physical copy of our special edition. I created the entirety of the special edition, including but not limited to cover design, typography, layout, page elements, chapter titles and headings, images and illustrations, color palette, text alignment, margins and bleed, paper and printing, binding, layout design, and style elements.

Puppy Love Illustration

I was assigned to create a set of multiple drawings that created a story, implementing graphic and spatial relationships, utilizing the basic elements and principles of design. I drew this piece titled “Puppy Love”, a chronological design inspired by mid-century illustration styles.
